Rational optimism that calmly accepts the pessimistic reality and overcomes the harsh reality with a firm belief that things will get better in the future.

The Stockdale Paradox is different from vague optimism or self-deception that is unrealistic and distorts reality in that it is accompanied by a cool-headed perception of reality and a clear will to achieve goals.

Named after James Bond Stockdale, an American military officer who was a prisoner of war.

While James Bond Stockdale was a prisoner of war in Vietnam, he faced the harsh reality and survived, while his colleagues who were only optimistic about the situation without preparation died from the continued heartache.
