A $5 billion Bitcoin transfer caused panic, leading to a 2% drop in Bitcoin's value. The transfer involved 75,021 BTC from the failed crypto exchange MtGox to an unknown wallet.

The transfer was part of MtGox's plan to return Bitcoin to creditors before October. Whale Alert, a service that tracks large cryptocurrency transactions, reported several transfers on May 28, ranging from 3,999 BTC to over 16,500 BTC.

Blockchain research firm Arkham Intelligence noted that between 01:41 and 02:54 UTC on May 28, there were 21 transfers from MtGox's cold wallets, mostly moving 2,000 BTC at a time. Later, an additional 32,137 BTC was moved, bringing the total to over $5 billion. These transactions all went to one inactive address. MtGox still holds about 138,000 BTC, worth over $9.36 billion.

MtGox's trustees did not respond to questions about the transfer. After the news, Bitcoin's price fell by about 2%, now trading at $67,875, down from $69,374.

Last month, analysts warned that such movements from MtGox could scare the market. MtGox’s final refund date is October 31, and trustees have been contacting creditors since January to verify their identities for repayment.
