According to CryptoPotato, a recent study found a security vulnerability in Apple's M-series chips that could allow hackers to obtain Mac users' encryption private keys. Because the vulnerability originates from the microstructure of the silicon chip, it cannot be directly patched. The research report states that the solution is to integrate defense measures into third-party encryption software, but this may significantly reduce the performance of M-series chips in encryption tasks, especially in earlier versions such as M1 and M2. The researchers also added that exploitation of the vulnerability occurs when the target cryptographic operations and the malicious application (with standard user system permissions) are processed on the same CPU cluster. This vulnerability affects both traditional and quantum-resistant encryption algorithms, with extraction times varying from minutes to hours depending on the key size. Although similar threats have been known before, researchers say GoFetch exhibits more aggressive behavior in Apple chips and poses a significant security risk.
