According to ChainCatcher, scammers stole $2.2 million worth of cryptocurrency from New Yorkers through a new job scam. The suspect claimed to help find remote jobs through text messages and asked job seekers to deposit US dollars into crypto accounts. Victims were told to buy cryptocurrencies on legitimate platforms (such as Coinbase and Gemini) and then transfer them to unmanaged digital wallets.
New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed a lawsuit to recover the frozen cryptocurrencies and hold the scammers accountable. The investigation showed that this scam spanned multiple jurisdictions, and the victims were mostly people who were eager to find remote jobs.
