Bank of England Deputy Governor Ben Broadbent said on Thursday that recent evidence supports a gradual rate cut, but assessing the appropriate pace of easing is a tricky matter. In a speech at the University of Edinburgh, Broadbent stated, 'Recent evidence further supports the removal of policy constraints, and I expect that we will continue to gradually remove these constraints over time.' Broadbent, who is responsible for financial stability, is seen as a centrist on the monetary policy committee. She remarked that at this stage, it is 'hard to know' how quickly interest rates should decline. Broadbent stated, 'To be clear, I expect that as the impact of the past significant shocks continues to wane, bank rates will decline over time.'
