Odaily Planet Daily News: India is collaborating with tech giants Google and Facebook to intensify efforts against investment fraud schemes known as 'Pig Butchering' that utilize cryptocurrency. According to the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs 2024 annual report, these scams primarily target vulnerable groups such as unemployed youth, housewives, students, and economically disadvantaged individuals. The report emphasizes the global nature of the issue, which also involves large-scale money laundering and cyber slavery. Cyber scammers often abuse Google's advertising services and Facebook's sponsored ads to launch fraudulent applications and malicious phishing schemes. To address this situation, India's Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) is working with these tech platforms to tackle the increasing incidence of cyber crimes occurring through their services. I4C is closely collaborating with Google to flag suspicious digital lending applications, monitor abuse of Google Firebase domains, and block Android banking service malware. The center also shares a list of phishing advertisers with Google to ensure prompt action is taken. Additionally, Google Pay has been integrated into the Citizen Financial Network Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS), enabling authorities to intercept and trace fraudulent transactions. This integration has saved over 16 billion rupees, benefiting more than 575,000 victims. Similarly, Facebook plays a key role in identifying and removing illegal lending applications and scam-related ads flagged by I4C. By sharing intelligence on scam pages and phishing links, I4C ensures that Facebook takes swift action to dismantle these operations. These initiatives have equipped law enforcement agencies with the necessary skills to track blockchain transactions, seize illicit digital assets, and dismantle cryptocurrency fraud networks.
