Man Scams e-Shops RMB 2 Million in Refund Fraud
A man in Beijing was recently sentenced to 12 years in prison for profiting 2.2 million yuan in an e-commerce refund scam. The man, Hu, had bought a camera lens in a e-shop two years ago. However, he found that the lens was defective and applied for a refund.
The e-shop owner asked him to return the lens, however, before the lens arrived at the owner, Hu received the refund.
Hu got curious about the experience and decided to order another lens. This time, he applied for a refund immediately after receiving it.
Instead of returning the lens he received from the merchant, he placed an item that was about the same size as the lens in the box and returned it.
He received the refund soon after that. He repeated the same scheme over and over, ordering high-priced items such as hard disks, graphics cards, luxury leather bags and watches, and returning plastic toys and other low-priced items, receiving a refund of the original item each time.
Hu would then sell the products on other trading platforms, making a huge profit. However, he was reported to the police by many merchants who received the bogus returned items and through his address and contacts, the police were able to locate him.
Prosecutors estimated that the amount of money Hu made from the scheme amounted to more than 2.2 million yuan.
Hu was sentenced to 11 years in prison, fined 110,000 yuan, and deprived of political rights for two years by the People's Court of Chaoyang District.
