In late November, Gensler and Democratic Commissioner Jaime Lizarraga announced they were leaving the SEC. The SEC is now led by three Republican commissioners: Mark Uyeda, Hester Pierce, and Paul Atkins.
Gensler, who is set to step down on Trump's inauguration day, has come under fire from crypto industry insiders, arguing that most cryptocurrencies qualify as securities and urging crypto companies to register with the SEC.
If Atkins is confirmed, the SEC will file fewer cases against cryptocurrency companies in the new year.
Additionally, the SEC may decide to look at staking in crypto ETFs. This could mean launching new products or making changes to existing ones.
