According to information shared by cybersecurity researcher Tayvano on X, multiple addresses associated with North Korean hackers are trading on the decentralized exchange Hyperliquid. Data shows that these addresses have collectively lost over $700,000. Tayvano is a well-known cybersecurity expert in the cryptocurrency industry and has voluntarily participated in the investigation of several hacking incidents.
However, Tayvano warned that making money or losing money is not the point; the underlying potential risks are what is most concerning. Tay wrote in a tweet:
"Honestly, if I were responsible for managing the four validation nodes of Hyperliquid, I would probably be scared to death right now."
Some people interpreted Tayvano's warning as 'regulatory risk,' as the U.S. government might intervene and force Hyperliquid to freeze these hacker-related assets. In response, Tayvano sarcastically stated:
"Hahaha, those fools who think the risk comes from the U.S. government forcing Hyperliquid to freeze assets really crack me up. Guys, North Korean hackers are not trading; they are testing."
In a subsequent tweet, Tayvano released a screenshot of private messages with the Hyperliquid team, in which Tayvano warned the Hyperliquid team that the protocol could be targeted by North Korean hackers and urged the team to take action immediately. However, the Hyperliquid team has not responded to Tayvano's warning.
In response to Tayvano's tweet, another security expert, Jurad, stated that he examined Hyperliquid's security from an external perspective, and the results showed that its performance was quite good, even better than most projects. At the same time, Jurad also called out to Tayvano:
"Even if your intentions are good, you should not publicly discuss hypothetical threats on Twitter. You should only sound the alarm when a real threat is occurring."
In addition, Jurad also stated that North Korean hackers have been actively using tools within the DeFi space. All major projects and dApps are equally vulnerable to attacks, and HL is no exception.
