Ethereum Moves Towards Dencun: Key Dates and Update Details

At the latest Ethereum developer meeting, known as DevCall, leaders reached a crucial consensus on the long-awaited move toward the Dencun upgrade, scheduled to hit the mainnet in 2024.

The roadmap to Dencun involves a series of tests on three testnets before its final launch on the main network. These tests will take place between January and February, marking a milestone in the evolution of Ethereum.

Dencun will make its first appearance on the Goerli testnet on January 17 at 6:32 (UTC). The next stage will be in Sepolia, another testnet, on January 30 at 22:51 (UTC). Finally, the third testnet that will host the update will be Holesky, on February 7 at 11:34 (UTC).

Although there is still no precise date for the activation of Dencun on the main network, it is expected that this process depends on the success of the tests on previous test networks, according to Tim Beiko, spokesperson for Ethereum DevCall.

A key step has already been completed in this process: the Goerli testnet experienced a "shadow fork", creating a temporary environment to evaluate the changes that Dencun will bring. The results were positive, with 99% participation of validators and only some minor technical details that did not affect its operation.

Regarding testing on the two remaining testnets, Beiko explained that it was decided to move forward with Sepolia first to give application, infrastructure and L2 (secondary layers) developers an extensive testing window, considering the large number of developments on that network. Holesky, for its part, stands out for its largest set of validators.
