The cryptocurrency hype master Sun Yuchen has played a big game again. At Sotheby's auction house, he bought a banana for 45 million RMB. This banana was even purchased by a staff member of the auction house for only 35 cents (approximately 2.53 RMB) at a fruit stand run by a Bangladeshi owner in Manhattan's Upper East Side in the morning.
This banana was ultimately sold for a sky-high price of 5.2 million USD at the contemporary art auction held by Sotheby's (including fees, the total transaction price reached 6.24 million USD, approximately 45.17 million RMB). The buyer is Sun Yuchen, a cryptocurrency mogul who graduated from Peking University, currently only 34 years old, and has frequently made headlines, being very adept at marketing himself.
A few years ago, Sun Yuchen had also bought a lunch with stock god Warren Buffett for 31 million RMB. However, due to his various attempts to attract attention, this lunch experience became tumultuous, causing Buffett to stop auctioning his lunches afterward. Sun Yuchen has also obtained citizenship in Grenada and became Grenada's ambassador to the United Nations.
Sun Yuchen's hype is actually not without profit; his goal is to promote the cryptocurrency Tron that he issued. When he bought Buffett's lunch, it caused a more than 13% increase in the value of Tron on that day.
Now this 45 million RMB banana will also attract attention to Tron, and perhaps during this surge in the cryptocurrency market, it might take off with investors. Many people also believe this auction of the banana is a money laundering scheme, and Sun Yuchen may only privately give Sotheby's a fee.
