OpenSea: Can you tell us a little bit about your artistic style and the main themes you explore in your artwork?
Costa Jpeg: I am an artist who primarily works with digital illustrations, however, my art also incorporates elements of abstract art, glitch art and collage, creating a mixed media approach, but I would say that the main concept of my work lies in how it communicates with dilemmas, controversies, memes, feelings and narratives of the web3 ecosystem.
OpenSea: Can you walk us through your creative process when developing an NFT series or work?
Costa Jpeg: I am a keen observer of artistic concepts and this is usually how I create a new artwork or series. Absorbing good art is first of all a great exercise and helps to shape our aesthetic awareness as artists.
Besides observation, I like to organize references, then sit down and write down my goals for a new project. After deciding on the concept, I start working on my first sketches. Overall, my creative process is slow and meticulous.
Also, some pieces need time to mature, I will let some pieces stay for a while to allow the layers, textures to mature and to reinforce the main ideas of the subject, of course, this is not a rule, there are some projects I must finish before the narrative loses its evidence, like my series “We Are Back”, I created 100 pieces of art in less than a week and they sold out very quickly.
OpenSea: Can you talk about any unique challenges or opportunities you encounter when creating art, especially in the digital realm of NFTs?
Costa Jpeg: It’s a fascinating market, as an artist my art can reach into the wallets of people from all over the world, this kind of reach is almost impossible to achieve through the traditional art market, having a digital art collection market is incredible, but it is also extremely challenging for artists who work primarily alone.
Even before you have great art, you need to have a lot of discipline and do a lot of research on the market to know how to operate. If I were starting out in the NFT industry today, I would first collect art and participate in the community, and then, after some time, I would finally start to become an artist. This way, I would be able to understand the market better before minting my first piece. I have had to learn from my mistakes, but I have no regrets.
OpenSea: What inspired you to create on Base? How do you think Base’s features will benefit your artistic expression?
Costa Jpeg: Base is the second layer, and I feel a lot of artistic vitality here. This blockchain's support for NFT technology and low gas fees have attracted the attention of many artists around the world. I see opportunities in Base to expand my artistic activities and enable more people to collect my artworks.
OpenSea: How has blockchain technology influenced or changed the way you create art?
Costa Jpeg: The idea of being able to create and submit art for sale quickly and securely, with proof of provenance, is amazing and has changed the way I work with art today, it’s liberating to be able to create a piece of art on my iPad and make it available to the community I’ve built in a matter of seconds, and manage professional connections and interactions with anyone in the world using my phone.
OpenSea: How do you plan to engage with your audience through NFTs on OpenSea? Are there interactive elements or community-driven aspects to your work?
Costa Jpeg: I think community building is very important, my NFT owners have exclusive access to my Discord community and can get access to mint new collectibles on Base and Ordinals, I really hope to see most minters have access to my community so they can participate in these interactions.
OpenSea: What future developments in the NFT space excite you most, and how do you plan to incorporate these developments into your future projects?
Costa Jpeg: I'm always looking for solutions on Ethereum layer 2, I believe a lot will happen on Base in the next 2 years and I'm excited to be a part of it, but I'm also keeping an eye on art on Bitcoin, I'm an artist and part of the Fake Rares community, I've released several NFTs through CounterParty and soon I'll launch my first collection on Ordinals.
This is important to realize because things change very quickly in Web3.
OpenSea: What advice do you have for artists who are just entering the NFT space and considering launching their first digital collection?
Costa Jpeg: In addition to what I have already said about researching the market and participating in the community, I would say that building a career in NFT art is a journey that requires many steps, many people enter this market for immediate results but end up getting frustrated, build a community, perfect your art style and be patient, keep working on it even when the market is not good and don't let yourself be carried away by negativity.
OpenSea: Where do you think digital art and NFTs will go in the next five years? How do you hope to contribute to this future?
Costa Jpeg: I think we are just at the beginning and the culture of collecting digital art using blockchain technology is still going to change dramatically, it is a new culture but it is established and it needs to keep evolving because we will eventually adopt it on a large scale.
In the coming years, I also believe in the expansion of the Metaverse and augmented reality tools, both concepts I think will become even more important to the work of artists, developers, and new technology enthusiasts.
I am targeting the NFT art market and just keep working hard every day.
