Illegal cryptocurrency mining in Paraguay causes the power bureau to lose about 4.1 billion Guarani per month

Felix Sosa, director of the National Electricity Administration (ANDE) of Paraguay, reported that this year, ANDE has intervened in illegal cryptocurrency mining activities seven times. The power load of this type of energy theft is very large, causing ANDE to lose about 4.1 billion Guarani per month in electricity bills that should be collected.

Sosa said that since 2022, ANDE has intervened in illegal cryptocurrency mining activities 60 times, and this year the most illegal activities were found in Alto Paraná Province, with a total of 5 interventions.

ANDE, in cooperation with the Public Prosecutor's Office and the National Police, inspected a warehouse in the Puerto Pabla neighborhood of Lambaré, Central Province, and found that the electricity meters in the warehouse had been modified and there was large-scale energy theft. The power load of "mining" is very large, and its electricity meter records only 2.2% of the electricity consumption that should be recorded, causing ANDE to lose 747 million Guarani per month. In addition, the equipment found in the warehouse is the same as that found in another intervention in Ñemby, so it may be the work of the same group of people.
