Alleged Scammers Swap 11K Fake Notes for USDT in Hong Kong 🚨
🕵️♂️ Police in Hong Kong arrested three people accused of stealing HK$3.11 million (~$400,000) worth of Tether (USDT). Nearly 11,000 fake banknotes were seized from their office.
1️⃣ The suspects convinced a 44-year-old businessman to convert USDT. They showed him bundles of cash he'd get in return, then asked him to transfer his USDT into their crypto wallet.
2️⃣ An insider revealed to the South China Morning Post, “Except for two real banknotes on the top and bottom, the others were fake training notes.”
3️⃣ After the transfer, the businessman wanted to inspect the banknotes, but the employees refused, saying they hadn’t received instructions from their manager.
📅 The incident was reported to police last Friday. By Monday, police had raided the office and seized 10,978 fake HK$1,000 banknotes.
💸 These notes looked real but had Chinese text saying ‘practice coupon’ and lacked watermarks.
👮♀️ A 42-year-old woman, a 24-year-old man, and a 40-year-old man were arrested for obtaining property by deception and possession of fake banknotes. They are also being questioned about similar crypto scams.
⛓️ If found guilty, they could face up to 10 years in jail for deception and 14 years for using fake banknotes.
