Investigation Uncovers North Korean Infiltration in Crypto Projects A recent investigation led by crypto analyst ZachXBT has exposed a widespread infiltration of over 25 cryptocurrency projects by developers linked to North Korea. The investigation began when a project team reported a $1.3 million theft from their treasury, which led ZachXBT to uncover a much larger network of compromised projects. His findings revealed that these developers received approximately $375,000 in payments over the past month alone, with historical transactions amounting to $5.5 million linked to individuals on the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctions list, including Sim Hyon Sop. ZachXBT’s detailed analysis highlighted the sophisticated tactics used by these developers to avoid detection, such as falsifying resumes, GitHub activity, and using fake IDs during Know Your Customer (KYC) processes. The investigation also emphasized the importance of recognizing red flags, including multiple developers from the same network applying for roles, discrepancies between claimed locations and accents, sudden drops in performance, and the rapid creation of new accounts following termination. The scale of this operation is significant, with estimates suggesting a single entity in Asia could be earning between $300,000 to $500,000 monthly by working across multiple projects simultaneously.
