Residents in a part of Sweden will soon get food delivered via drones resembling old-fashioned milk cans. This aerial delivery system could potentially expand across Sweden.
The project, called foodora Air, is a joint effort involving three Swedish companies: Tele2, a mobile connectivity firm, foodora, a delivery service for restaurants and groceries, and Aerit, a drone manufacturer. It will kick off in May in Värmdö municipality, close to Stockholm.
#customers will begin by using the foodora app to order food from a local business. If the customer resides in a drone-friendly location. The order will be packed into a cardboard box and loaded onto one of Aerit's Nimbi #drones .
Then, the drone will take off and fly to the customer's address, using Tele2's 5G & stay connected with a human supervisor who can take over if necessary.
When the drone arrives at the address, it will hover in position and lower the box to the customer's property using a cable. After placing the box on the ground and releasing it, the cable will be pulled back up, and the drone will fly back to where it started.
