Biden has directed aides to coordinate with McCarthy to schedule a call with McCarthy in Washington on Sunday morning, a White House official said in a statement. Biden is likely to speak with McCarthy on his way back from Hiroshima, where Biden has been attending the Group of Seven summit since Thursday. "President Biden continues to closely monitor negotiations on the bipartisan budget framework and the urgent need for congressional action to avoid a default," the official said. "He received updates from his team last night and this morning on the progress of the negotiations."
The White House and McCarthy's teams spent much of Saturday blaming each other, arguing over who was to blame for the breakdown in spending negotiations and talks to raise the debt ceiling. McCarthy told reporters at the Capitol early Saturday that the White House had "backslid" and said progress was unlikely until Biden returns to the United States.
