Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has confirmed that the recent hack of his X (formerly Twitter) account was the result of a SIM swapping attack. In a post on decentralized social network Farcaster, Buterin said the attack was carried out via SIM swapping, indicating that scammers were able to trick T-Mobile into taking control of its phone number. One of the key points in Buterin's experience was the vulnerability of Twitter's account recovery system. He emphasized that even if a phone number is not used as a two-factor authentication (2FA) method, it can still be used to reset a Twitter account password.
