According to CoinDesk, Kemi Badenoch has been elected as the leader of the Conservative Party. This decision follows four months of debate after the former leader, Rishi Sunak, announced his resignation. Sunak's resignation came after the Labour Party's significant victory in the recent general election. Badenoch emerged victorious over Robert Jenrick in the leadership contest.
The Conservative Party has historically been supportive of cryptocurrency, proposing regulations to treat crypto as a financial activity and expressing a desire to make the country a crypto hub. However, the topic of digital assets did not feature prominently in the recent leadership contest. Su Carpenter, executive director of Crypto UK, noted that neither Badenoch nor Jenrick had been particularly vocal about their stance on crypto, technology, finance, or payments innovation.
Badenoch has not publicly shared her views on cryptocurrency. During her campaign, she focused on advocating for a new integration strategy for individuals entering Britain. As the Conservative member of parliament for North West Essex, she previously served as the shadow secretary of state for housing, communities, and local government, where she challenged the Labour government. In her tenure with the Conservative government, she held several ministerial roles, including secretary of state for business and trade. Badenoch has emphasized the importance of financial services to the economy and has called for regulations that are not overly burdensome.
