According to BlockBeats, on August 26, CoinDesk reported that Shaktikanta Das, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), emphasized caution regarding the full-scale implementation of the retail Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). Despite the pilot program having over 5 million users, Das advised against hastily launching a system-wide CBDC.

India announced plans for both retail and wholesale CBDCs during the Finance Minister's budget speech in 2022. By the end of that year, the RBI had initiated pilot programs for both types of CBDCs. By the end of 2023, the retail CBDC had achieved one million transactions in a single day.

On Monday, Das mentioned that up to 16 banks are currently participating in the retail CBDC pilot. However, he did not disclose the specific number of daily transactions. Previously, the RBI had stated that there was no urgency to implement a full-scale retail CBDC and had not provided a concrete timeline. Das's recent comments suggest a continued cautious approach towards a comprehensive rollout.
