In 2015, a guy named Mark threw a huge house party to celebrate getting a job at a tech startup. Mark had been dabbling in Bitcoin for a few years and had accumulated around 20 BTC—worth only a couple of hundred quid at the time. But to him, Bitcoin was like digital play money.

The problem? Mark stored his Bitcoin wallet’s private key on a piece of paper that he taped to the bottom of his coffee table. In his mind, it was safe and “hidden” from view, and besides, he thought, “Who would ever care?”

During the party, someone spilled drinks on the table, and a friend thought it would be funny to flip the table over. Guests started signing the paper, drawing all over it, and laughing, thinking it was just a party prop. By the end of the night, the paper was a mess, smudged with marker, beer, and food stains.

Fast forward to 2021, Bitcoin skyrocketed, and Mark suddenly remembered his stash. He scrambled to find that paper—only to discover it was an unreadable, ruined mess. He spent hours trying to decode the stained, scribbled private key. But all he had left were some fuzzy numbers and letters, and his precious Bitcoin was lost forever.

Mark always jokes that he threw the most expensive house party in history and that his friends’ doodles are “priceless” in more ways than one.#Write2Earn!
