Hong Kong and Macao police jointly cracked a cross-border fraud case and successfully recovered HK$388,000!
On the 19th and 22nd of this month, the police received reports from two middle-aged men from mainland China. The two revealed that they contacted a man surnamed Huang through messaging software and agreed to conduct the transaction at a hotel in Cotai, Macau. They exchanged HKD 258,000 and HKD 130,000 respectively, and at the same time remitted equal amounts of RMB to designated mainland bank accounts. After confirming that the remittance was successful, they handed over the corresponding amount of Hong Kong dollar cash. However, soon after, they received a notice from the bank stating that the money received was suspected of fraud and the receiving account had been frozen. Realizing that they might have been deceived, the two quickly called the police and lost a total of HK$388,000.
After careful investigation, the police quickly identified the man surnamed Huang and intercepted him at the border port on the 22nd. During the investigation, Huang admitted the facts of the transaction with the two victims and revealed that he followed the instructions on the Internet and took the money to a hotel retail store in Central District and handed it over to Wang. For each transaction, he gets 1% of the transaction amount as a reward, in addition to 700 yuan in transportation expenses.
Based on Huang's confession, the police acted quickly and intercepted another suspect at a retail store in Central District. The suspect admitted that he was responsible for collecting the cash brought by Huang and using the money to purchase virtual currencies according to instructions, earning a difference of 10,000 to 20,000 Hong Kong dollars.
In this operation, the police successfully recovered HK$388,000 in cash lost by the two victims.
