Layer 2 Optimism is looking to take its blockchain throughput one step further by integrating layer 3 applications onto the OP Stack.

On May 8, the Optimism team said they are welcoming layer 3s to Superchain, where they can build on the OP Stack and share revenue with the Optimism Collective.

OP Stack is an open standards codebase that supports development on Superchain, but it “is not limited to L2 chain deployers and application builders,” the team said, adding that “it can also leveraged by the L3 ecosystem”.

Optimism Superchain is a network of layer 2 chains, called OP Chains, that share layers of security, communication, and open source technology.

Layer 3 will have access to benefits such as eligibility for retro funding, airdrops, and developer grant programs, but there may be limitations on certain features such as the ability to interact.

Layer 3 protocols are built on layer 2 to host application-specific decentralized applications, providing advanced solutions for scaling, performance, interoperability, customization, and expense.

There are two major features coming to OP Stack to support L3 builders – gas token customization and “Plasma Mode”.

Gas token customization, a highly requested feature in the final stages of development, allows developers to use layer 2 tokens as gas fee tokens for layer 3 protocols. This reduces initial costs because No need to make costly transactions when bringing gas tokens from L1 to L2, then to L3.

Plasma Mode is an alternative to the data availability layer that can reduce the fixed costs of operating L3 compared to L2. Data availability refers to the ability of network participants to access and verify data stored on the blockchain.

The goal is to make Optimism Superchain more accessible to developers by providing layer 3 features and functionality.

Opinions against Layer 3

However, not all are convinced that L3 is the horizon for scaling Ethereum. In April, Polygon CEO Marc Boiron argued that a layer 3 network is unnecessary and could increase security risks for Ethereum by siphoning value from the network.

On May 9, Boiron reiterated his stance claiming that “L3 is worse than L2” before adding:

“L2 allows you to return to Ethereum frequently and quickly. L3 does not. They always need to overcome their L2 overlords.”

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin commented on L3 in late 2022 and said that they will serve another purpose of scaling by providing “custom functionality.”

According to L2beat, Rollup-based Optimism, or OP Mainnet, is the second largest layer 2 network with a total value locked of $6.76 billion, a market share of about 18%.
