Republican presidential candidate and former President Trump narrowly escaped assassination attempt again while playing golf in West Palm Beach, Florida on Sunday (September 15). Agents found a suspect and an AK-47 rifle, and the suspect has been arrested. Trump is safe.
According to reports from The New York Times and Reuters, the US Secret Service said the incident occurred at around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday (around 5:30 a.m. Singapore time on the 16th) at the Trump Golf Club, where Trump was on the golf course.
The FBI said this was clearly an assassination attempt. President Biden and Vice President Harris have received briefings and are thankful that Trump is safe.
Law enforcement officials said at a press conference that when Secret Service officers were clearing potential threats on the golf course before Trump played, they found a man hiding in the bushes and shot him. The man then fled the scene in a black car but was intercepted by agents and arrested.
Agents also found a rifle with a scope, a camera and two backpacks in the bushes. At the time of the incident, Trump was on the court 365 to 457 meters away from the rifle.
The sheriff said a witness saw the gunman and took a photo of the gunman's car and license plate.
The New York Times and Fox News, citing unnamed law enforcement officials, said the suspect was Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old man from Hawaii.
Trump issued a statement saying: "There was shooting where I was, but before rumors spread, let me be the first to tell everyone: I am safe and sound!"
He added: "I will never be defeated. I will never surrender! I am forever grateful for your support."
The Secret Service said it was not immediately clear if the suspect fired any shots.
This is the second time Trump has been nearly assassinated in less than two months. On July 13, Trump was shot while attending an outdoor campaign rally in Pennsylvania. His right ear was broken, but one rally participant was killed and two others were injured.
