On September 13, Worldcoin announced the launch of World ID integration on the Solana blockchain, via a new cross-chain protocol from the Wormhole Foundation.
According to Worldcoin’s blog post, just two and a half months after being announced as a recipient of Wave1’s community grant, Wormhole has successfully completed this cross-platform bridge.
Cross-platform authentication
World ID is built on Worldcoin's Ethereum layer-2, called World Chain, with the primary purpose of providing privacy-preserving identity verification services. The system allows users to securely log in and authenticate to decentralized applications (DApps) and other services without revealing personal information.
This integration makes it easy for developers on the Solana network to include World ID authentication in their DApps, while also opening up cross-chain compatibility with services on the Ethereum network.
Robinson Burkey, co-founder of the Wormhole Foundation, said:
“The integration of World ID into Solana is a major step forward in the identity verification space. With the combination of World ID and Wormhole Queries, developers can now easily create real-world user-centric applications across multiple chains, thereby strengthening trust in decentralized ecosystems.”
The Development of Worldcoin
According to data from Worldcoin, the company had 6,630,191 users as of July 31, 2024. While it is unclear how many users are participating in the DApp economy through World ID, the number of Worldcoin users has been growing steadily since its launch on July 24, 2023.
As Bitcoin Magazine reported, Worldcoin recently expanded its services to Austria, becoming the second European country to deploy the system. The company previously operated in Spain, but privacy and age control concerns led to a voluntary shutdown.
Worldcoin adoption has also seen a surge in recent years in Southeast Asia. In August, the Malaysian government adopted World ID as its standard authentication service and entered into a strategic partnership to expand Worldcoin’s Orb hardware manufacturing capacity.
Worldcoin is not currently available in Vietnam.
