The UK government has introduced a bill to address the legal status of digital assets, including cryptocurrencies, NFTs and tokenised real-world assets.
The bill introduces a new category of personal property, a "thing", which would apply to certain digital assets.
This will help lawyers determine ownership in disputes such as divorce and provide protection for cryptocurrency owners from fraud and scams.
Justice Secretary Heidi Alexander said the new category would allow digital assets to attract personal property rights.
Earlier this year, the Law Commission published a consultation and report confirming that some digital assets could be considered personal property.
