Exchange WazirX suffered a security breach early Thursday morning, with six assets stolen and losses totaling $230 million.
Indian cryptocurrency exchange WazirX suffered a cyberattack today, with one of its secure multi-signature wallets compromised. The attackers hacked into a multi-signature wallet on the Ethereum network and quickly stole multiple tokens.
Multi-signature wallets require two or more private keys to confirm before processing transactions.
Security firm Cyvers was the first to warn the exchange in an X post after the multi-signature wallet made several suspicious transfers. The hack resulted in a total loss of $234.9 million to the exchange.
The stolen cryptocurrencies include ETH ($52.5 million), USDT ($5.79 million), PEPE ($7.6 million), GALA ($3.5 million), MATIC ($11.24 million), and SHIB ($102 million). All tokens were immediately converted to ETH, and some have already been sold.
The meme coin has fallen nearly 10% in the past 24 hours, considering the huge amount of SHIB stolen as a result of the hack.
Crypto analysts tracked a series of transactions following the hack and concluded that the attack was "methodical and organized."
According to investigations, the attackers had been practicing hacking for the past eight days before executing their plan today. They did this by upgrading the multi-signature wallet, which gave them access to the funds.
"The attackers upgraded the multi-signature to a malicious version, which allowed them to drain the multi-signature," the analysts wrote on X.
Following the breach, WazirX suspended all cryptocurrency and Indian rupee withdrawals for proper investigation.
"We are aware of a security breach in one of our multi-signature wallets. Our team is actively investigating the matter. To ensure the safety of your assets, we will temporarily suspend Indian rupee and cryptocurrency withdrawals," WazirX wrote in the X post.
The attack severely affected the price of WazirX's native token WRX, which has fallen 21% since the attack. #WazirX黑客事件 $WRX
