El Salvador's wallet had twice as many bitcoins

President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele published data from the official cryptocurrency wallet. It turned out that it stores 5,689 BTC, which is twice as much as previously thought.

Nayib Bukele stated that most of the first cryptocurrency will be sent to a cold wallet. According to him, this will be the first Bitcoin “piggy bank” in the country.

The information provided by the head of state differs from the tracker, which estimates the number of bitcoins at only 2,864 coins. According to the analytical portal Arkham Intelligence, the vast majority of BTC stored in the cold wallet was transferred from the Bitfinex cryptocurrency platform.

Bukele has repeatedly stated that the country not only buys bitcoins, but also acquires them through a cryptocurrency citizenship program, currency conversion for businesses, mining and government services. A survey conducted by José Simeon Cañas University found that in 2023, 12% of Salvadorans used Bitcoin to pay for goods and services.
