Warning: Cryptocurrency scam with deepfake videos in Canada
According to CTV News Toronto, three Canadian men lost hundreds of thousands of dollars after seeing fake videos purporting to show famous figures endorsing a cryptocurrency investment scheme. Mohammad Haq lost 226,000 Canadian dollars after watching a video of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Darrell Badnick lost C$130,000 and Giovanni Poliano C$17,000 in similar scams. These videos were manipulated using artificial intelligence. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Center reported that investors lost 148 million Canadian dollars to investment scams in the first half of 2024, most of which were related to digital currencies.
