Last week, the stock market trading was relatively calm, and the US dollar index rose for 8 consecutive weeks😃
Last week’s quiet session ended with the USD spot index rising for an 8th straight week, the longest such run since 2005. The strength of the USD was helped by CNH’s record weakness without a lot of verbal jawboning from the PBoC, in addition with a move higher in US yields amid a rush of corporate supply and oil nearing $90 a barrel. Equities were similarly quiet, with Apple dominating most of the auction as it sold off around 6% in aggregate after China announced that it would seek to broaden the ban on iPhones across government and SOEs. In addition, the US saw the highest number of corporate defaults YTD in over 3 years, though they are expected to peak around the middle of next year and below their recent peaks despite borrowing rates being at the highest levels in 15 years.

Moreover, as further signs that the market is turning increasingly confident that the Fed is truly nearing the end of its hiking cycle, interest rate vol has finally cratered in the last 3 months after stubbornly diverging from equity and FX vol for much of the year. Despite a strong bear-steepening move higher in bond yields over the past month, implied vols have come down and bond markets appear to be much more sanguine that there will no ‘taper tantrum’ this time, despite sticky pricing pressures, rebounding oil prices, and a QT plan that is still operating as scheduled. Asset prices are likely to remain well supported with this sentiment, but a lot can change in the winter, especially if oil prices continue to spike higher from here.

Apple's revenue slightly increases, Amazon exceeds expectations🙃
Stock markets were reluctantly dragged lower, with SPX falling to -0.8% day's lows, before recovering to close roughly unchanged as equities braced for Apple and Amazon earnings double-header after the close. Apple disappointed early on with slightly higher revenues offset by weaker iPhone sales, with management forecasting Q4 performance to continue the decline from Q3. On the other hand, Amazon beat expectations with the stock rising +10% in the after-hours on strong beats in revenue, earnings, and positive Q3 forecasts thanks to stabilizing growth rates in AWS. Finally, management mentioned that high inflation continues to weigh on consumers and they are seeing "down trading" on brand options as shoppers have turned more price sensitive.
