A group of scientists in China has made a historic breakthrough by using quantum computing to compromise the security of Bitcoin, which was thought to be invulnerable. In just 320 seconds, the researchers used an 18-qubit quantum computer to break the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm that protects cryptocurrency transactions. Although the hack was a scientific experiment and not a direct attack, the cryptocurrency community is already debating possible solutions, such as post-quantum cryptography, to protect wallets and prevent fund theft.
