Solana, a company developing a blockchain platform, introduced an innovative feature - zero-knowledge compression (ZK compression). Created in collaboration with Light Protocol and Helius Lab, this feature will help developers reduce costs and increase scalability when creating tokens and accounts.
On June 21, Light Protocol announced a partnership with Helius Labs to bring ZK compression to Solana. This will significantly reduce application development costs while maintaining the security and performance of the platform.
ZK compression uses zero-knowledge checks to reduce the cost of creating tokens and accounts. These checks ensure data integrity and allow data to be retrieved through supported RPC providers. Developers will be able to minimize the cost of storing data on the blockchain by storing only the roots of the state in the chain.
Mert Mumtaz, CEO of Helius, emphasized the importance of reducing costs and improving the scalability of ZK compression: “We are achieving improvements at scale of 10,000 times by compressing state on-chain, moving closer to creating a global state machine with fast synchronization.”
Austin Federa, head of strategy at Solana, noted that this solution will reduce the high costs of storing online accounts. “ZK compression will save on tokens and Solana accounts, allowing more companies to create network products,” he said.
Despite the positive reviews, some in the crypto community argue that this feature resembles a Layer 2 (L2) network. Adam Cochran believes that the compression tool acts like L2 and that the developers are building it differently: "The Solana team will eventually realize that they've built an effective L2 feature, which is a positive thing as long as they're honest about it."
Ethereum investor Ryan Berkmans also believes that the new product is essentially L2.
Anatoly Yakovenko, co-founder of Solana, responded that the product works like L2, but without the common disadvantages. He acknowledged that this still has some risks, but noted that it does not require a multi-signature security council, switch chain IDs, a control token or an external sequencer: “This is L2, which avoids many of the traditional problems, while -continuing to charge Solana validators all transaction fees."
The introduction of ZK compression in Solana is a major advance that promises to improve scalability and reduce costs.
