Happycoin.club - This week, the founder of the now closed crypto exchange Thodex, Faruk Fatih Ozer, will go to prison, where he will begin serving a sentence of 11,196 years.
Ozer founded the once largest cryptocurrency exchange in Turkey, Thodex, and used it to steal huge sums from his clients, with the help of his relatives.
His brother and sister received the same sentence - 11,196 years. As the judge noted, this is the longest sentence ever imposed by a Turkish court.
During his last days of freedom, Ozer grew a chest-length beard and took a taxi to southern Albania, intending to pitch a tent on the seashore. Law enforcement eventually found him at a public event.
By that time, he no longer had a hardware wallet containing $2 billion, which he managed to smuggle through airport security when leaving Turkey. According to him, he has already emptied it to pay compensation to injured investors, and threw the device itself into the Ionian Sea.
The Istanbul Supreme Court did not even comment on this extraordinary claim, sentencing him and his relatives to a sentence that totaled 43,000 years.
It took 62 arrests and coordinated efforts by law enforcement agencies from several countries to catch Ozer. Throughout this time and at the final verdict, Ozer denied accusations of fraud and stated that funds from his exchange were stolen by a third-party hacker.
Formally, Faruk Ozer will serve a prison sentence of up to 13,221 years.
