Ripple Labs completed the acquisition of digital asset custody company Standard Custody on June 11. This deal, first announced earlier this year, is significant as Ripple launches a US dollar-backed stablecoin and expands its real-world asset tokenization ambitions.
As part of the agreement, Jack McDonald, Standard Custody's CEO, will continue in his role while also taking on the role of Ripple's senior vice president of stablecoins.
Ripple emphasized the importance of Standard Custody's digital asset custody license, supporting the company's reliability in this field with the approval it received from strict institutions such as the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS).
The acquisition of Standard Custody followed Ripple's acquisition of Metaco, another digital asset custody firm, for $250 million in 2023.
According to Chainlink, real-world asset tokenization (RWA) represents an $800 trillion market potential for all capital assets that can be tokenized globally, presenting huge opportunities for the custody services industry.
Real-world asset tokenization has become a major strategic focus for leading crypto firms such as Ripple Labs, Chainlink, and Algorand. This new tokenization market is thought to represent huge future potential for cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology and digital assets.
In May, the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC) published a report testing a real-world asset tokenization pilot program over Chainlink's CCIP compliance protocol with a group that includes major banks such as JP Morgan, Edward Jones, and BNY Mellon.
The purpose of this pilot program was to test the tokenization of funding data and simulate integrating real-world data on the blockchain.
