After five and a half years of inactivity, a Bitcoin whale moved 8,000 Bitcoins (BTC) worth $536.5 million from Coinbase's cold storage wallet.
Blockchain analysis firm Arkham Intelligence noted that the Bitcoin address "1ABww1...mCSKq" received all 8,000 BTC in block 847,490 at 13:26 UTC on June 11.
After one full block and 11 minutes, this wallet sent all Bitcoin to the Binance storage address "15u4H...rMsLa". According to Arkham data, not a single test was done before these two major transfers.
Big Movement of Dormant Bitcoins
The sudden activation of dormant addresses with significant assets can provide a sell signal, especially when sent to an exchange warehouse address.
Although the owner of the Bitcoin wallet is unknown, this transaction represented an almost 1,700% increase in value of Bitcoin purchased at $3,750 on December 5, 2018.
The two linked BTC accounts are among other BTC whales that have woken up in recent weeks. For example, on May 12, 1,000 BTC worth a total of $61 million were sent. A week ago, a BTC wallet belonging to Satoshi Nakamoto moved 687 BTC worth approximately $44 million to two different addresses.
An analysis by Chainalysis and Fortune on April 24 revealed that approximately 1.8 million BTC addresses have been dormant for more than a decade, with at least one early BTC wallet reactivating every month. At current prices, these walletsâexcluding Nakamoto's walletâhold $121 billion worth of Bitcoin.
However, it is unclear how much of this amount can be recovered because many of these wallet holders have lost or forgotten the seeds required to access their Bitcoins. BTC has recently experienced a 7.5% price decline, falling from a local high of $71,650 on June 7 to $66,250 on June 11.
Despite the decline, the Fear & Greed Index, which tracks crypto market sentiment, still ranks in the "greed" zone with a score of 74 out of 100.
