A member of the right-wing political party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has issued a serious warning against Worldcoin's iris scanning practices.

“The eye scanner was not developed for medical purposes, but to collect biometric data. These devices are only used to monitor people globally," said Christina Baum, also a member of the Bundestag - Germany's federal parliament.

She claims that users who allow eye scanning could have their activities “permanently tracked,” including movement patterns and purchasing habits.

“So transparent people are becoming a reality. And that's more than scary."

AfD is a right-wing political party in Germany. They are known for their Euroscepticism and anti-immigration stance, as well as preaching Islamophobic narratives in the name of nativism. One of the party's leading figures, Alexander Gauland, said in 2018 that:

“Hitler and the Nazis are just grains of sand in more than 1,000 years of Germany's successful history.”

Worldcoin is another project from Silicon Valley's newest prodigy Sam Altman. Sam is also the co-founder of OpenAI, the organization behind the hugely popular AI-powered ChatGPT language model. Cryptocurrency project Worldcoin claims to advance human internet experience in a world that is becoming overcrowded with robots and algorithms.

Worldcoin's eye scanning technology

Worldcoin has set up its signature “balls” in locations around the world, where people can scan their iris to create a WorldID and exchange it for the project's WLD token.

The project aims to create a new identity standard for the Internet era and revealed plans to allow governments and businesses to use the technology to verify their identities.

Worldcoin's official FAQ page states that no personal data is collected by default and that iris scans are “immediately deleted once the iris code is generated.”

However, users can opt into a more comprehensive data agreement, allowing Worldcoin to store those images “for training our algorithms.” This data may also be sent throughout the European Union and the United States if the user chooses to participate.

#Baum 's comments echo similar privacy concerns raised by other data watchdogs and countries.

The data protection supervisory office of the German state of Bavaria said it has been probing Worldcoin since November 2022. Earlier this week, Kenya suspended the company's operations, while government agencies assessed their "authenticity and legality."

Both French and British data watchdogs have also raised concerns about the legality of such high-risk data collection.

CertiK: Worldcoin bug allows anyone to become a sphere operator

Cryptocurrency security firm CertiK revealed it recently discovered a vulnerability in the Worldcoin protocol that allows an attacker to bypass the verification process to become an iris scanner operator.

According to CertiK, this vulnerability would allow anyone to bypass verification requirements to become a Worldcoin Orb operator. For example, the individual will not be required to be a legitimate company in order to undergo proper ID verification or pass a vetting interview.

“Under normal circumstances, only legitimate businesses that pass Worldcoin's strict identity verification process can operate the sphere, collecting users' iris information.”

The security firm claims it reported the issue to Worldcoin through a “standard white hat disclosure” process, after which the project's security team confirmed the vulnerability and “quickly issued a fix.” .

CertiK has verified and confirmed the threat mitigation fix. The security company added that it will make public details about the discovery and mitigation of the vulnerability “at some point in the future.”

It's worth noting that CertiK's revelation comes just a week after Worldcoin published a report on the security audit of the #Worldcoin protocol conducted by auditing firms Nethermind and Least Authority.

These audits cover multiple areas, vulnerabilities in code that lead to adversarial actions and other attacks, as well as protection against malicious attacks and other exploits.

Auditing firm Nethermind flagged 26 items during the security review, of which 24 were determined to be fixed after the verification phase, one was restricted, and the remaining was confirmed known.

According to Worldcoin, Least Authority identified three issues in the protocol and made six recommendations, all of which have either been resolved or are planned to be resolved.
