Crypto cracking hacker Joe Grand managed to help a man recover the password to access his digital wallet which contained around $3 million in bitcoin (around 15 million reais, at the exchange rate current). The owner of the fortune, identified only as "Michael", had lost access to the money because the file containing the password was corrupted.

In recent years, Grand had already helped others with problems with cryptocurrencies in virtual wallets, according to the American magazine Wired.

In 2022, he recovered $2 million for a client. However, in previous cases, access to the values was done physically, using hardware whose security the hacker was able to break. Michael's case was different, regarding the software that stored the amount. When purchasing the assets in 2013, Michael used a password manager called RoboForm to generate a 20-character code.

The password was stored in a file encrypted with TrueCrypt, not in the wallet itself. So when the file containing the footage was corrupted, Michael was no longer able to access the password and, therefore, the money. The amount Michael invested at the time was US$4,000, but today, just over ten years later, the account held US$3 million.

Grand needed the help of Bruno, a friend, to try to find a flaw in the RoboForm application, and he ended up finding it. Until 2015, the program associated a randomly generated password with the date and time of the user's computer. In other words, Grand realized that it could force the application to generate all passwords created by RoboForm in a given period, taking into account the characteristics of the original password.$SOL  $BTC  $USDC
