Over $109M in 2013 Bitcoins Moved in May

After a relatively quiet April, May saw many dormant Bitcoin addresses become active after years of inactivity. In particular, a major holder from 2010 re-emerged this month, spending 2,050 BTC from a block reward cache.

Additionally, $9.6 billion in Bitcoin from Mt. Gox was transferred as of Tuesday morning. On the same day, May 28, 2024, at block 845.533, another entity decided to transfer 145.89 BTC from a dormant address from 2013, worth $9.8 million.

The wallet was initially created on November 20, 2013, when BTC was trading at $590 per coin. At that time, Bitcoins were worth $86,075. If sold today, the holder would realize a gain of 11,388% since November 20, 2013.

The transaction was tracked by btcparser.com, showing that funds moved from a Pay-to-Public-Key-Hash (P2PKH) address to another old-style P2PKH wallet. The Bitcoins were then transferred again from the new address created on May 28.

However, the associated Bitcoin Cash (BCH) remains inactive, with 145.89 BCH valued at $68,181. The transaction had two privacy issues, scoring low at 45 out of 100 for overall privacy due to the "send all" option and repeated address entries.

May saw several “dormant bitcoin” transactions from 2013, with 17 transactions this month. A total of 1,613.93 BTC from 2013, valued at $109.39 million today, was transferred over the last 29 days.
