Odaily Planet Daily News: On May 28, the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) held the first hearing in the case against Samourai Wallet founder Keonne Rodriguez and William Lonergan Hill in the Southern District of New York. The two were arrested in late April this year and charged with money laundering and operating an unlicensed remittance business. However, only Rodriguez and his lawyer appeared in court. Hill is still in Portugal and has not yet responded to the U.S. government's extradition request. The prosecution said it has a lot of substantive evidence and it is still waiting for Rodriguez to hand over his 2 TB hard drive. At the same time, Rodriguez's lawyer cited a letter from each of the two senators to the U.S. Attorney General stating that non-custodial encryption software cannot be a remittance service. The judge announced that Rodriguez will continue to be under house arrest and the next hearing in the case will be held at 11:30 a.m. Eastern Time on September 4, 2024. (bitcoinmagazine)
