#MemeWatch2024
Meme coins, or what are known as meme coins, are a type of cryptocurrency that appeared as a joke or mockery of traditional digital currencies. These coins were originally created for entertainment but quickly gained popularity and value in the market.
**Dogecoin** is the first meme coin created, and was developed in 2013 as a fork of Litecoin. Its developers, Billy Marcus and Jackson Palmer, were inspired by the popular Shiba Inu internet meme and turned it from just an idea into a tradable cryptocurrency.
After the success of Dogecoin, many other meme currencies appeared that mimic its model, such as **Shiba Inu** and others. These currencies operate on their own decentralized computer networks or as tokens on other crypto networks such as ERC-20 on the Ethereum network.
Although meme coins may seem fun, they carry high investment risks due to their extreme volatility and lack of the strong economic fundamentals that support other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. However, some early investors in meme coins have achieved significant returns, making them attractive to some as investment opportunities.
