First UK crypto ETPs to launch on May 28

The UK's first cryptocurrency exchange-traded products will finally begin trading next week, almost a decade after the first such instruments appeared in Sweden.

This stance is in sharp contrast to exchanges in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong and the US, as well as most of continental Europe, which offer crypto ETPs to both retail and institutional investors.

U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETFs have combined assets of $50 billion, according to regulatory filings, although they only launched in January, about 80 percent of which are held by retail investors.

A number of other crypto ETP managers, including ETC Group and CoinShares, are known to have applied to list instruments on the LSE, ideally on May 28 if they receive regulatory signature from the FCA in time.
