Do Kwon's extradition case returns to the Supreme Court of Montenegro after a new appeal

Since his arrest in March 2023, Do Kwon has been detained in Montenegro. He may be extradited to South Korea or the United States to face fraud charges.

After a new successful appeal by Do Kwon's defense team, the Supreme Court of Montenegro will decide whether Kwon will be extradited to the United States or South Korea.t

According to a May 24 report by local news site Vegesti, the Montenegro Court of Appeal accepted the arguments of Kwon's lawyers and sent the extradition matter back to the Supreme Court for "reconsideration and decision." This appeal is the latest legal maneuver used by Kwon's team to delay his transfer to the United States or South Korea to face criminal charges.

The Montenegro Court of Appeal said in its decision: “If the accused agrees to extradition, a brief procedure will be implemented, through which the court will decide the extradition mechanism,” adding:

“The trial court should have heard the defendant again to ensure that his consent to extradition was voluntary, that he was aware of the consequences, and knew that this consent could not be withdrawn.”
