The bill was proposed by Tom Emmer, the majority whip of the U.S. House of Representatives, and aims to prevent the Federal Reserve from issuing central bank digital currency (CBDC). Republicans expressed concerns that CBDC could be used to control Americans. Democrats said in a debate before the vote on Thursday that these concerns were exaggerated and that the ban would hinder innovation and research in the public sector.
