Who Has the Most Bitcoins?
Satoshi Nakamoto owns the most bitcoins with an estimated 1.1 million BTC. Satoshi not only discovered but also started Bitcoin, by being the first miner to create a transaction block. It is estimated that Satoshi mined more than 22,000 blocks starting on January 3, 2009, and received more than one million bitcoins in cumulative block rewards for the work.
How Many Bitcoins Does Satoshi Have?
As a result, Satoshi is estimated to own more than 1.1 million BTC, worth around $47 billion in February 2024. These Bitcoins are not stored in one address but are spread across around 22,000 addresses. None of it has ever been spent other than a few test transactions. Satoshi left the project in 2010 and has not been heard from since.
Individual Bitcoin Whales
Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss: After their 2008 settlement with Mark Zuckerberg for Facebook shares and $65 million in cash, the pair started an angel investment firm. A few years later they announced that they had purchased about $11 million worth of bitcoin at an average cost of $10 per coin. It is estimated that the Winklevoss twins own ~70,000 BTC.
Tim Draper: Titan VC has been interested in Bitcoin for some time; so much so that he made one initial purchase of 40,000 BTC on the Mt Gox exchange.
Unfortunately, all 40,000 coins were lost in the hack and subsequent bankruptcy. However, in 2014, Mr. Draper bought 29,656 BTC for $18.7 million at a cost of about $632 per coin.
Michael Saylor: Microstrategy founder and chairman revealed in an October 2020 tweet that he personally holds 17,732 BTC. It is reasonable to assume that he has gained even more—becoming a public Bitcoin Bull
