Many bigger names have revealed allocations to spot bitcoin ETFs.

Wednesday marks the deadline for institutional investors to file their quarterly 13F reports with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, disclosing positions held as of March 31, 2024.

After Tuesday's surprising revelation of a $161 million allocation from the State of WIsconsin, more investment whales turned out to be contributing to the unprecedented success of ETFs.

According to the Q1 report, on March 31, hedge fund Millennium Management held $1.94 billion in shares of spot Bitcoin ETFs, distributed across five funds: ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB), Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB), Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin ETF (FBTC).

However, the fair market value of those stocks represents just 3% of the hedge fund's $64 billion in assets under management, according to its quarterly 13F filing with the SEC.

Millennium, founded by Wall Street legend Israel Englander, held about $844 million in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Fund (IBIT) – the majority of its actual Bitcoin ETF allocation – as of Q1. It also holds an investment of more than $800 million in the Origin Fidelity Wise Bitcoin Fund (FBTC), as well as about $202 million in shares of the Grayscale Bitcoin Fund (GBTC), and about $45 million in both the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) ARKB and the Bitwise Bitcoin ETF Trust (BITB).

Another major hedge fund, Paul Singer's Elliott Capital, disclosed a stake worth nearly $12 million in BlackRock's IBIT as of the end of the first quarter.

Finally, Apollo Management Holdings disclosed a $53.2 million stake at the end of the quarter in ARK/21's ARKB.

Other notable names that revealed asset allocations to spot bitcoin funds on Wednesday were Aristeia Capital and Hudson Bay Capital.

*A hedge fund is a type of investment fund in which fund managers use active and diverse investment strategies with the aim of generating high returns for investors. Hedge funds are typically only open to high net worth investors, due to the large initial investment required and the complexity of the investment strategies used.
