Alexander Vinnik, co-founder of the BTC-e exchange, pleaded guilty to money laundering. It was determined that there were large-scale illegal activities in the stock market between 2011 and 2017. BTC-e operated without registration with FinCEN and without AML or KYC protocols. Vinnik established many fake companies and financial accounts around the world and made at least $121 million in illegal money transfers via BTC-e. Vinnik was arrested following the closure of BTC-e in 2017 and extradited to the US in 2022.😱
