Crypto scammers stole 1,155 wrapped Bitcoins using a technique that misleads users. According to CertiK, on May 3, a user lost more than $69.3 million in WBTC due to an attack on the address. The attacker first simulated a transfer of 0.05 Ethereum (ETH) and then stole WBTC in the next transaction.🚨
Blockchain investigator ZachXBT and crypto security provider Cyvers confirmed the news. CTO Cyvers Meir Dolev said this was "probably the largest loss due to address fraud" to date.
In address fraud, victims are presented with a similar wallet and are tricked into transferring assets to the attacker. A malicious address usually imitates the first and last 4-6 characters of the address.
The incident has already surpassed last month's exploitation and fraud revenues, which totaled approximately $25.7 million in digital assets. CertiK also noted that April saw the lowest level of DeFi fraud since 2021.
