Do Kwon released from Montenegro prison, Supreme Court considers extradition request
Do Kwon was released from a Montenegro prison on Saturday while the Supreme Court considers extradition requests from the United States and South Korea, Bloomberg reported.
The Supreme Court on Friday put on hold a lower court decision to extradite a Terraform Labs co-founder to his native South Korea.
Kwon faces fraud charges in South Korea and the United States related to the 2022 collapse of Terra Luna, which wiped out about $60 billion in market value, DL News reported.
"We released Do Kwon from prison because his regular prison term for traveling using false documents had ended," prison director Darko Vukcevic told Bloomberg. "As he was a foreign citizen and the documents were withheld, he was taken to the foreign police The Directorate paid a visit and they will deal with him further.”
Kwon's lawyer Goran Rodic reportedly confirmed his release. State television said Kwon was transferred to a foreigners' shelter late on Saturday and confirmed his passport was being held by authorities.
A year ago, Kwon was caught on the airstrip at Montenegro's Podgorica airport while trying to travel to Dubai using a fake Costa Rican passport, DL News reported at the time.
He was later convicted of attempting to travel using forged documents and jailed. He has since been challenging efforts to extradite him to face trial.
Potential extradition to the United States or South Korea is now up to Montenegro's Supreme Court, but no timetable for a decision was given, according to Bloomberg.
