Steve Wozniak Advances in Legal Battle Against YouTube Over Scam Videos

#Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has secured a victory in an appellate court against YouTube regarding the misuse of his image in fabricated videos to promote a #Bitcoin #scam in 2020. The appellate court's decision reverses a previous ruling by a lower court, which had exonerated #YouTube from liability.

The appeals court in San Jose determined that YouTube cannot invoke a controversial communications law as a defense to shirk responsibility for the fraudulent use of Wozniak’s image, as reported by Bloomberg. This ruling not only enables Wozniak to proceed with his lawsuit against the video-sharing service but also sets the stage for a potential revision of the federal legislation that shields platforms like YouTube from liabilities associated with content uploaded by users.

In 2020, Wozniak, along with 17 other high-profile individuals including Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Michael Dell, initiated legal action against YouTube and its parent company, Google. The lawsuit was in response to the widespread dissemination of manipulated videos on YouTube, falsely advertising a scam using their images.
