Bitcoin: he threw away 176 million euros with his hard drive, but he has a plan

James Howells inadvertently threw away a hard drive containing 8,000 Bitcoin in 2013. He has just announced a final gamble to try to find it in a huge landfill.

The story made headlines at the time, so you may remember James Howells, the unfortunate Brit who inadvertently threw away a hard drive containing 8,000 Bitcoin – and has been trying for years to find it (or at least the valuable data it contains). In August 2013, James Howells, 28, was teleworking from his home in Newport, Wales.

He then decides to tidy up his office a little, and among other things removes spare parts from old computers and then puts them in the trash. In a drawer he found two hard drives – he knew one of them was empty, while the other contained files from another computer that had been the victim of a soda spilled on the keyboard years earlier.

He then chose to throw away this hard drive full of data without thinking much about it. Then asks his wife to take all this waste to the dump before going to bed. During the night, James Howells, a software engineer by profession, had a hunch that throwing away the hard drive might be a bad idea. But when he wakes up, he realizes that his wife got up very early and that everything he threw away has already gone to the landfill.
